Today, the WNBA released its shortened 2020 season schedule due to COVID-19. Let me just say, it's going to be amazing. Taking place in the "Wubble" at IMG Academy in Florida, this season will be one for the books. Before we jump into the action, it's important to highlight what the WNBA is doing to promote social change throughout the season.
The season is set to kickoff on July 25th. On opening day, players will be wearing Breonna Taylor's names on their jerseys with the option to continue to do so for the remainder of the season. In addition, the warm up jerseys for the whole season will say "Black Lives Matter" and "Say Her Name".
WNBA Commissioner, Cathy Engelbert, wrote:
This 2020 WNBA season will truly be one unlike any other, and we’re looking forward to using our collective platform to highlight the tremendous athletes in the WNBA as well as their advocacy for social change.” (via CBS 2).
Once again, I'm so glad that the WNBA is allowing for players to use their platform to strive for justice, social change, and the end to systemic racism in this country.
Now, it's time for the WNBA action we've all been waiting for. With new superstar talent entering the league, this season's action is going to be epic. As a Seattle Storm fan myself, I'm psyched that we have the first game of the season which will be on ESPN on July 25th at 9am PST. So, we get see Sue Bird and the Storm face off against #1 draft pick, Sabrina Ionescu, and the NY Liberty. Wow! I mean come on, what a treat! I'm so excited.
Despite some early poor experiences in the "Wubble", this season is sure to give fans the joy and basketball that they have been missing. Make sure to check out the full WNBA schedule and some of the must see games.
While this season will be different, it's still important to acknowledge the coronavirus pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement.
Wear a mask. Black Lives Matter.
Educate yourself. Donate. Speak up against systemic racism. ALL Black Lives Matter.
