A 2020 Recap of Women in Sports

The year 2020 certainly hasn't been the year anyone expected. With the coronavirus shutting down the sports world, and the world at large, in March, women in sports have still been able to conquer and break barriers in this crazy year. Here is a recap of women's sports history of 2020.


January

  • WNBA passed historic CBA agreement for players

February

  • Katie Sowers becomes the first woman (and openly LGBT person) to coach in the Super Bowl

  • Jennifer King becomes the first full-time African American female coach in the NFL

March

April

  • WNBA Draft ratings increase by 123%

  • Sabrina Ionescu is selected as the #1 overall pick in the WNBA Draft

May

  • NAIA now sponsors women's flag football

June

  • Sue Bird, Megan Rapinoe, and Russell Wilson team up to host the ESPYs and fight for the Black Lives Matter movement

July

  • Alyssa Nakken becomes the first woman to coach on-field in the MLB

  • WNBA's Maya Moore frees Jonathan Irons from prison after he was falsely accused of a crime

  • Becky Hammon became the first female to be a head coach during an NBA preseason game

  • Kara Lawson was hired by Duke University to coach basketball

August

September

  • Jennifer King, Sarah Thomas, and Callie Brownson make NFL history by being in the first football game to have a female coach on both teams and a female official

  • Maya Moore and Jonathan Irons got married

  • Doris Burke become the first female analyst to call a finals NBA game

  • Naomi Osaka won her third U.S open while dedicating her masks to victims of police brutality

October

  • Seattle Storm wins the WNBA title

  • Sue Bird breaks finals assist record, assists in a half of a finals game, and became the third basketball player to win a title in three different decades.

  • ESPNw holds the Women's Summit

  • Billie Jean King, Lindsey Vonn, and Candace Parker become part of the Angel City FC ownership

  • Jessica Mendoza becomes the first female analyst for a World Series game

  • Emilie Castonguay becomes the first female agent to have a client picked first overall in the NHL draft.

  • 2K announced that NBA 2K21 would feature a WNBA MyCareer mode

  • Jeanie Buss becomes first female owner to win an NBA title

  • Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe get engaged

November

  • Kim Ng becomes MLB's first female and Asian GM

  • Sarah Fuller becomes the first woman to play in a Power 5 football game

December

  • SBJ labels the WNBA orange hoodie the Best Fashion Statement of 2020
